TIMELINE OF EVENTS

JUNE 28 Nyah Mway was returning home from an 8th grade graduation barbecue with his friend. He was stopped by 3 officers. When the officers asked to pat him down, Nyah fled and resulted in an officer chasing and tackling him down.

JUNE 28 Nyah was punched twice while the officer sat on top of him as officer Patrick Husnay runs up, punched him, and shot him point blank on the chest. He was given first aid at the scene but later died at Wynn Hospital.

JUNE 29 Utica Police Department (UPD) held a live press conference at 10 a.m. UPD released additional details about the shooting. Later that night, the community organized a vigil in honor of Nyah, which took place on Shaw Street (the site of the shooting).

JUNE 30 The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation has launched a probe into the death of 13-year-old Nyah Mway of Utica. Full body camera videos from the Utica Police Department officers involved were released to the public.

JULY 1 Hundreds of members from Utica’s Karen community and others came to City Hall in Utica to demand justice for Nyah Mway from the Utica Common Council.

JULY 4 March for Nyah Mway announced to take place on July 13th. The march will start at Thomas R. Proctor Park and end at Roscoe Conkling Park. Learn More!

JULY 6 The funeral service of Nyah Mway took place at 9:00AM at 1123 Court St Utica NY 13502. The funeral service was open to the public. Learn More!

JULY 13 We held a peaceful March for Nyah Mway. The march started at Thomas R. Proctor Park and ended at Roscoe Conkling Park. Learn More!

JULY 14 Those demanding justice for Nyah Mway participated in the 2024 Utica Boilermaker. Participants held banners to the finish line!

JULY 19 In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a vigil was held for Nyah Mway. It was a night of community, grief, healing, and remembrance. Learn More!

JULY 31 A leading political news magazine, The Nation, released an article on Nyah’s murder and the justice we demand.

AUGUST 4 The Justice for Nyah Mway team announces that on THURSDAY, August 8th at 6:00 PM EST, we will be hosting a birthday block party to celebrate the life of Nyah Mway. Learn More!

AUGUST 7 The Justice for Nyah Mway team presented official list of demands at the Utica common council meeting. Support from the community filled the room.

SEPTEMBER 18 Chee War, the mother of Nyah Mway has filed a Notice of Claim against the City of Utica. Click here for more details!

JANUARY 9 PRISM, the award-winning independent & nonprofit newsroom led by journalists of color, released their report on the murder of Nyah Mway and the calls for justice.

JUNE 28 marks our 1 year anniversary that Nyah Mway was taken away from us. In remembrance of Nyah Mway, we held a community meal and prayer, with a candlelight vigil later in the evening at our Buddhist Temple.

JUNE 30 A civil rights lawsuit has been filed against the City of Utica and Officer Patrick Husnay regarding the death of 13-year-old Nyah Mway. The complaint states that Nyah, whose family fled violence in Burma, was stopped for jaywalking on June 28, 2024.
