Birthday Block Party for Nyah!

COMMUNITY GATHERS TO HONOR NYAH MWAY’S LIFE AT BIRTHDAY BLOCK PARTY ON AUGUST 8TH.

On Thursday, August 8th, the Utica community came together to honor the life of Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old Karen refugee tragically killed by a Utica Police Officer, with a heartfelt birthday block party. Despite the rain moving the event to the 1500 block of Brinkerhoff Street, the spirit of the community remained strong as friends, family, and supporters gathered to commemorate what would have been Nyah’s 14th birthday.

The event began with a warm welcome from Kay Klo, setting a tone of unity and reflection. Nyah’s mother and brother delivered emotional speeches, sharing their pain and their hopes for justice and change. Pastor Ballman and Trinh Truong followed, speaking briefly on the need for accountability and community healing.

As a tribute to Nyah, attendees joined in singing “Happy Birthday,” followed by the cutting and sharing of a large birthday cake. The celebration continued with performances, including a traditional Karen Don dance and songs by Bonn and Amos, adding a cultural richness to the evening. A moving poem, by Big Lee, brought a poignant reminder of the loss the community has faced.

The Justice for Nyah Mway team expressed their gratitude to all who attended, emphasizing the importance of standing together in the fight for justice and legislative change. The event served not only as a celebration of Nyah’s life but also as a call to action for a safer and more equitable community for all.
